Seven miles. Meopham stretches out, claiming the title of one of Europe’s longest linear settlements. It is a place brimming with history and unique stories. This seemingly endless village, south of Gravesend, has a population of nearly 7000 residents.

Meopham’s name echoes through time. It originates from “Meapaham” meaning Meapa’s village. The first record of it appears in 788 during King Offa’s reign. The pronunciation? Simple. It is “Mep-uhm”.

Let’s talk history. Benedictine monks established a priory hospital here in the 12th century. Three medieval manor houses once governed the land: Meopham, Dodmore, and Nurstead.

Meopham’s layout is unique. It is divided into four main settlements along the A227. These settlements are Hook Green, The Street known as Dodmore, Meopham Green, and Culverstone.

The parish owns the lordship of Meopham Manor. The Parish Council meets at Meopham Windmill. The council consists of twelve members. They act as joint trustees of the ancient manor.

Hook Green marks the northernmost part of the village. Once called Hoo Green, it centers around a small triangular green. Here, you will find many listed buildings, including the Weavers Cottage.

The Street holds the title of Meopham’s oldest settlement. Parts of the medieval Dodmore mansion still stand. Though damaged in the earthquake of 1382, its history echoes. The 14th-century church of St John the Baptist stands nearby. Also, The George Inn once housed the manorial court of Dodmore. Today, the Courtroom Bar remains as a reminder.

Meopham Green boasts the largest remaining village green in the parish. Buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries surround it. You can find two pubs here. They are the King’s Arms and The Cricketers’ Inn.

Cricket thrives on Meopham Green. The sport has been played here every summer since at least 1776. Sir John Major, former Prime Minister, is a patron of the Meopham Cricket Club.

Culverstone Green is the most southern settlement. Road widening has consumed much of the original green.

Meopham Windmill. Built in 1801 by James Killick, a millwright from Strood. The Killick family walked eight miles each day from Strood to work at the mill. The mill operated by wind until 1929. Then, an engine took over until 1965. Now fully restored, it stands in full working order.

Simon de Meopham was born around 1272. He rose to become Archbishop of Canterbury.

The two John Tradescants, father and son, lived in Meopham. They were plant explorers. They introduced many plant species to England.

Meopham’s roads have evolved. The road from Gravesend to Wrotham became a turnpike in 1825. The railway station opened in 1863, connecting Meopham to London.

Meopham offers a blend of history and modern life. It is a long village with a story at every turn.
