A church has stood on this site, here at St Andrew by the Wardrobe, since before the 1200s. St Andrew by the Wardrobe, despite its rather whimsical name, has a rich history woven into the fabric of London. The church earned its unusual name from its proximity to the King’s Wardrobe. This wasn’t a literal wardrobe, of course, but a significant building used to store the monarch’s clothing, ceremonial robes, and other royal items. Imagine the collection of luxurious fabrics, sparkling jewels, and opulent garments that once resided within those walls! The original St Andrew by the Wardrobe church, along with the King’s Wardrobe, fell victim to the devastating Great Fire of London in 1666. It was then rebuilt by the esteemed architect Sir Christopher Wren, known for his remarkable contributions to the rebuilding of London after the fire. Sadly, this wasn’t the end of St Andrew’s turbulent journey. During World War II, the Blitz brought more destruction. German bombing raids left the church in ruins, with only the tower and outer walls still standing. Thankfully, the spirit of London persevered. St Andrew by the Wardrobe was carefully reconstructed within its surviving shell, showcasing remarkable resilience and a dedication to preserving the city’s history. Step inside, and you’ll find a poignant reminder of this turbulent past – a statue of St Andrew, dating back to around 1600, stands as a silent witness to the centuries of change and upheaval that have swept over this sacred ground.
