Amidst the gentle slopes and lush greenery, View Ridge unfolds before you. View Ridge wasn’t always a place of clear vistas. Originally, dense forest covered this area, obscuring the breathtaking views. Imagine standing here in the 1930s, surrounded by towering trees, the potential for scenic beauty hidden just beneath the foliage. View Ridge, as we know it, began to take shape during the Great Depression. Two innovative radio broadcasters, Al Balch and Ralph Jones, saw an opportunity amidst the economic hardship. With a mere $25 down payment, they acquired ten acres of forested land, dreaming of transforming it into a residential haven. Their vision was to create a neighborhood where homes offered stunning views of Lake Washington and the Cascade Mountains. They started by clearing the land, the scent of burning slash filling the air as bonfires consumed the felled trees. As the trees came down, the magnificent views were revealed. View Ridge became more than just a name; it became a reality. Balch and Jones cleverly used their media savvy to promote their project. They hosted picnics, advertised in the academic community, and even managed to secure a feature in Life magazine, showcasing View Ridge homes. This publicity proved invaluable, drawing in buyers eager to own a piece of this emerging neighborhood. View Ridge grew steadily, expanding its boundaries and attracting a diverse community. The neighborhood was annexed to Seattle in 1942, solidifying its place within the city’s fabric. View Ridge Elementary School, initially housed in portable classrooms, opened its doors in 1944, a testament to the growing families who called View Ridge home. Today, View Ridge retains its residential charm, a quiet neighborhood nestled amidst the bustling city. As you stand here, take a moment to appreciate the vision and determination of those early developers who transformed a forested ridge into a place of breathtaking views.
