Here at Kilómetro 12, we stand at a station with a story. Kilómetro 12 is more than just a train stop. It is a testament to Argentina’s railway history.
This station is located in Tapiales. Tapiales is a part of La Matanza. La Matanza is in Greater Buenos Aires. Kilómetro 12 marks kilometer 12.6 from Puente Alsina.
Originally, this station was part of the Puente Alsina-Aldo Bonzi line. However, that line closed in 2017. Flooding near Puente Alsina station caused the closure. Kilómetro 12 then became the terminus. It became the head of the Kilómetro 12-Libertad branch.
Look around you. Notice that Kilómetro 12 sits under the Ricchieri Highway. Nearby is Ingeniero Castello station. It is on the González Catán line. Across from us is Agustin de Elía station. That station is on the Haedo-Temperley line.
Kilómetro 12 is part of the General Belgrano Railway. Trenes Argentinos has operated it since 2015. Diesel multiple units provide passenger service here.
This station is basic. It has temporary platforms. But Kilómetro 12 is equipped with modern features. Security cameras, lighting, and a SUBE card reader are present. A permanent guard is also on duty. Sadly, there is no wheelchair access. Access is limited for people with reduced mobility.
There are plans to reactivate the KM 12-La Salada branch. Trenes Argentinos Operaciones and the Ministry of Transportation are considering it. The reactivation may happen after viaduct construction. This viaduct will link Aldo Bonzi and Tapiales.
The new viaduct will improve travel times. It will enhance operational safety. The double track will allow trains to run in both directions. It will eliminate crossings with the Haedo-Temperley line.
