It connects directly to the main island by road. The other seven islands offer a different experience from Sentosa and mainland Singapore. Let’s focus on St. John’s Island, Lazarus Island and Kusu Island. These are the most well-known after Sentosa. They are easily accessible via public ferry from Singapore. Many visitors explore them together in a day. Start your trip at Kusu Island before heading to St. John’s and Lazarus Island. You can even stay overnight at St. John’s Island. Tiny houses are available at Lazarus Island since mid of 2023. Overnight stays are not permitted on Kusu Island.
Kusu Island, meaning ‘Tortoise Island’ in Hokkien, has a legendary story. It is said a giant turtle turned into an island. This saved two shipwrecked sailors. Visit the Taoist temple housing Tua Pek Kong and Guan Yin. Explore the three Malay keramats that commemorate Syed Abdul Rahman, a pious man from the 19th century, and his mother and sister. Pilgrimages occur during the ninth month of the Lunar calendar. Devotees hope for good health and peace. The shrines are also linked to fertility. Many couples visit hoping for a child. Do not forget to visit the Tortoise Sanctuary. It houses hundreds of tortoises.
St. John’s Island is the largest. It once served as a quarantine station. This was for immigrants from the late 1800s to early 1900s. Today, it offers a tranquil escape. St. John’s Island hosts a 10-day Vipassana Meditation course. Singapore’s only offshore marine station also calls this island home. Visit the marine lab to discover local marine life. The lab is within walking distance of the ferry terminal.
Lazarus Island lacks its own ferry terminal. But it connects to St John’s Island via a causeway. Enjoy the pristine beach. Many claim it’s the best in Singapore. The calm waters are ideal for swimming.
Pulau Seringat is near Lazarus Island. A causeway connects them. Pulau Seringat has a small beach with great views.
Public ferries run to St. John’s Island, Lazarus Island and Kusu Island. Ferries depart from Marina South Pier. Island Cruise and Marina South Ferries are the main operators. Marina South Ferries also offers direct routes to Lazarus Island. These depart from Marina South Pier or Sentosa Jetty.
Remember to bring sufficient water and food for your visit. Encounters with wildlife are possible. There are no medical services available on the islands. Box jellyfish have been sighted in Singapore’s waters recently.
