Do names of streets ever speak volumes? The Rue de l’Insurrection Parisienne whispers tales of a city’s revolutionary spirit.

Welcome to the Rue de l’Insurrection Parisienne. It is a place where history was written in barricades. This street resonates with the echoes of Parisian uprisings.

A century and a half ago Parisian revolutionary spirit illuminated the march of history. This occurred during the 72 days of the Commune. Exhausted by the siege of the city and the betrayals of the official government, people rose up. They imagined a more just and egalitarian Republic. Women and men actively participated in this insurrectional experience. It was a time full of great hopes.

From March 18 1871 Parisians built hundreds of barricades across the city. Many were immortalized by photographs. These photos were portraits of national guards and other supporters of the Commune. Insurgents claimed the revolt of June 1848 as their inspiration. The eastern districts of Paris were once again at the heart of the struggle. In the 20th arrondissement alone there were over one hundred barricades. This was between the beginning of the insurrection and the Bloody Week. The Semaine Sanglante tragically ended the Communard experience between May 21 and 28 1871.

The last battles of the civil war took place in the eastern districts. These included La Villette the Buttes-Chaumont the Bastille area and the Père Lachaise cemetery. This happened for several reasons. The Versaillais entered Paris on May 21 through the Porte de Saint-Cloud. This was on the opposite side of the city. The Commune tried to defend each district one by one. They were preventing them from falling into enemy hands. They retreated to new barricades when their positions became untenable.

The eastern districts had a large population of workers employees and small business owners. They also had a strong presence of the National Guard. The National Guard military units were now in revolt. They represented the citizens. Revolutionaries had support from Parisians. The Commune was more popular than in wealthy neighborhoods. Many bourgeois residents had deserted the city. In the elections organized on March 26 almost 60% of registered voters cast their ballots in the 11th and 20th arrondissements. This compares to less than a quarter in the 7th and 8th arrondissements.

A large part of the federal troops lived in the east of the capital. The fighters had their families their ties and their habits there. After a terrible siege popular solidarity continued to express itself. During the Bloody Week several figures of the revolution were rescued and hidden by acquaintances or neighbors. This allowed them to escape death or exile to New Caledonia.

The Rue de l’Insurrection Parisienne stands as a reminder. It symbolizes the courage and resilience of ordinary people who dared to dream of a better world. Their spirit lives on inspiring future generations to fight for justice equality and freedom. This street is more than just a location. It is a testament to the enduring power of the human spirit.
