What if I told you that this unassuming park, the Folie Saint-James, was once the stage for extravagant parties and lavish displays of wealth? Picture this: the year is 1777. Claude Baudard de Vaudesir, the Baron de Sainte-James, a man of considerable wealth and even greater ambition, desires a pleasure garden to rival the nearby Bagatelle, a folly owned by the Count of Artois. He commissions François-Joseph Bélanger, a renowned architect known for his opulent designs, to create a garden that screams extravagance. The Baron, it is said, instructed Bélanger with a simple yet telling directive: “Make what you want, as long as it’s expensive.” And expensive it was! The Folie Saint-James, with its sprawling gardens, became a symphony of follies, each one trying to outdo the last. Imagine a river, artificially created, meandering through the grounds, spanned by charming bridges and punctuated by whimsical grottos. At the heart of it all stood the piece de resistance, a colossal artificial rock formation, assembled from giant blocks of sandstone hauled all the way from the Forest of Fontainebleau. This wasn’t just any rock; it housed a luxurious bathing room, a hidden grotto, and a network of tunnels. This flamboyant display of wealth, however, was tragically short-lived. By 1787, the Baron, crippled by the financial crisis, was forced to relinquish his beloved Folie. The property exchanged hands, was subdivided, and gradually, much of its grandeur faded. Today, as you wander through the tranquil grounds of the Folie Saint-James, let your imagination transport you back to its heyday. Envision the laughter of partygoers echoing through the gardens, the clinking of champagne glasses, and the murmur of awe at the Baron’s extravagant follies. Although much of its former glory is gone, the Folie Saint-James offers us a peek into a bygone era, a reminder that even the most ostentatious displays of wealth can be fleeting.
