“Mowlem Primary School opened in 1887” a simple statement right? However it marks the beginning of countless stories within these walls. Originally named Mowlem Street School it was built to accommodate 360 boys and 360 girls. Imagine the hustle and bustle of so many children.
As the local population grew Mowlem Street School expanded. In 1898 and again in 1902 the school was altered to hold 410 boys and 410 girls. The school was reorganized over the years. By 1964 a nursery class was introduced.
During World War II most Bethnal Green children were evacuated. Teachers went with them to the countryside. But some parents wanted their children to stay. All those children went to one school Mowlem. Mowlem became a safe haven during a very dangerous time.
In 1971 Mowlem Street School became Mowlem Primary School. A new single-story building was constructed for 280 children. This is the Mowlem Primary School we know today.
Today Mowlem is a mixed community school. It can accommodate 240 children aged 3 to 11. Many pupils are of Bangladeshi heritage. For many of them English is not their first language.
Mowlem aims to inspire creativity wonder and curiosity. The school wants children to learn about the past and the world. Knowledge is key to how history is taught here. The school uses enquiry-based learning. Children ask questions think critically and evaluate evidence. They learn to draw conclusions. The curriculum helps children understand their community. It shows them the part they can play.

The school has a rich history curriculum. Year 1 students learn about Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King. They learn about changes in life over time. Year 2 students study Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. They also learn about explorers. Year 3 students study the Romans. Year 4 students learn about Vikings. Year 5 students study the Victorians. Year 6 students study World War 2. They also do a local history study.
Mowlem Primary School is more than just a building. It is a place of learning growth and community. It has a long and fascinating history.
