Slipping through time, imagine yourself back 8,000 years. The last ice age has retreated, leaving behind a shallow depression in the landscape. Water gathers, reeds and grasses take root, and SSømosen, as it will come to be known, begins its long, slow life. Sømosen today, straddling the border of Ballerup and Herlev municipalities, is a testament to the enduring power of nature. Established as a protected area in 1951, Sømosen has grown from 20 to 23 hectares, a small but vital haven for biodiversity in the bustling suburbs of Copenhagen. A third of Sømosen is parkland, inviting strolls amidst scattered bushes and grassy expanses. The rest is a mosaic of open water, dotted with small islands, and a dense reed forest whispering secrets to the north. A wooden bridge extends over the northern reeds, beckoning you closer to the rich life within. Imagine the four species of lappedykker ducks: the tiny little lappedykker, the dark-necked sorthalset, the elegant grønstrubet, and the crested toppet. Sømosen’s waters also host mallards, tufted ducks, pochards, shovelers, teals, wigeons, gadwalls, pintails, and common pochards. Look up. A bird tower in the south offers panoramic views of the entire landscape, perfect for spotting a passing peregrine falcon, sparrowhawk, or buzzard. Even the secretive marsh harrier is a regular visitor. Children’s laughter echoes from the northwest corner where a nature playground offers covered tables and benches, a perfect spot for a family picnic. While the children play, you might catch a glimpse of a fox slinking through the reeds or perhaps even the elusive weasel. Sømosen holds secrets beneath its placid surface. Seven spearheads from the late Roman Iron Age were discovered here, along with numerous wooden artifacts. Who knows what other treasures lie buried in the peat, waiting to be unearthed? As you leave Sømosen, remember its long journey from glacial depression to protected haven. Carry with you the whisper of the reeds, the calls of the ducks, and the quiet rustle of a fox in the undergrowth.
