Modernity meets tradition. The Dresdner Mühle stands tall a testament to Dresden’s industrial heritage. Today we will explore its story.

The Dresdner Mühle also known as Bienert’sche Hafenmühle is a grain mill. It is located at Alberthafen in Dresden’s Friedrichstadt district. Its location near the harbor was chosen because grain was imported from overseas.

Construction of the Dresdner Mühle took place from 1912 to 1914. The architectural firm Lossow and Kühne designed it for the Bienert company. Bienert operated several mills in Dresden. The Dresdner Mühle was built as a reinforced concrete structure. This was necessary because the Royal Saxon State Railways planned to expand through the Bienertmühle Dresden-Plauen site.

At the time of its opening the Hafenmühle was one of Germany’s most modern mills. It featured a mechanical system for grain transport and milling. This system reduced the need for manual labor. It also had modern fire protection systems. These included sprinkler systems and electrical fire detectors. The mill’s silo tower reaches a height of 63 meters.

The Dresdner Mühle suffered minimal damage during World War II. Milling operations resumed as early as 1945. Initially the mill was privately owned in the GDR.

In 1958 the Dresdner Mühle became a partially state-owned enterprise. In 1972 it transitioned to public ownership. This was part of the restructuring of the GDR economy. The mill became part of VEB Mühlenwerke Dresden as Plant II. In 1984 the mill received new technical equipment.

Reprivatization occurred in 1990. The Dresdener Mühlen GmbH was founded. Since 1991 the Dresdener Mühle belonged to the PMG Premium Mühlen Gruppe. In 2014 Bindewald and Gutting acquired it. In 2003 the Dresden subsidiary was renamed Dresdener Mühlen KG.

In 2012 the Dresdner Mühle processed 125000 tons of grain. It produced up to 340 tons of wheat or rye flour daily. This flour was stored in 62 silos. Dresdener Mühlen KG employs 55 people.

The Dresdner Mühle today remains a vital part of Dresden’s economy. It combines historical significance with modern milling technology. The mill continues to produce high-quality flour. It supports regional farmers and bakers. The Dresdner Mühle remains a landmark in Dresden. It is a symbol of the city’s industrial past and present. Its commitment to quality and innovation ensures its continued success. It is a testament to Dresden’s enduring spirit of enterprise.
