Sophienstraße 7 is the address you want to remember. Here at this address is the Park-Café. This Bavarian restaurant offers a cozy lounge bar and a large beer garden. It also has an extensive event program.
The Park-Café is housed in a traditional Bavarian building. It was built in 1937. In its early years, the Park-Café served as a coffee house and exhibition venue. It sits in the middle of Munich’s old botanical garden.
The building is under historical protection. It is an example of Munich’s architecture from the Nazi era. Architect Oswald Bieber designed it in 1935/37. It forms the southern point of view of Katharina-von-Bora-Straße. This street once connected the Old Botanical Garden with Königsplatz.
After the Glaspalast burned down in 1931, plans changed. The NSDAP took power in 1933. They abandoned plans to rebuild the Glaspalast. Instead, they built the Haus der Deutschen Kunst.
The area was redesigned as the Alter Botanischer Garten in 1936. A small art exhibition building was added. This is now the Kunstpavillon München. In 1937, the Neptunbrunnen and the Park-Café were built. Both were designed by Joseph Wackerle and Oswald Bieber. The Park-Café was restored after sustaining significant war damage. It became a popular club in the 1980s.
The building faces Königsplatz. It features four monumental rectangular pillars. These support the porch and align with the former Arcisstraße. The design reflects the Nazi-era architecture of the surrounding area. The garden side of the Park-Café has women’s heads above the tall doors.
