“Mazagran,” the name echoes with tales of bravery and a curious coffee concoction. Today we stand at Rond-point Mazagran. It’s a place seemingly ordinary but it holds a fascinating story linked to a distant battle in Algeria.

Let’s journey back to 1840. The French army faced a siege in the town of Mazagran, Algeria. One hundred twenty-three French soldiers under Captain Lelièvre bravely resisted the attacks. They fought against Abd El-Kader’s troops numbering around 10,000 men.

During this siege, the soldiers sought warmth and courage. They drank coffee mixed with eau de vie. This drink became known as “Mazagran”. It wasn’t just the drink that carried the name. A special cup was also created. This cup was a tall, stemless glass. The Bourges factory originally made it.

The story goes that many of Lelièvre’s men hailed from Berry. They remembered this drink from the battle in North Africa. Upon returning home, they continued to drink it. They used the same type of glass. They called the glass “Mazagran”.

The French public and press popularized the heroic defense of Mazagran. King Louis-Philippe commemorated the battle. He awarded a medal to the 10th Company of the 1st Light Infantry Battalion of Africa.

This medal was a bronze circle. It featured the effigy of Louis-Philippe wearing a laurel crown. The inscription read: “Louis-Philippe King of the French”. Some soldiers added a tricolor ribbon to wear the medal.

So, what began as a desperate measure for warmth and courage during a siege transformed into a cultural phenomenon. The name “Mazagran” lives on. It stands as a testament to French resilience and ingenuity. The legend even extends beyond Paris. There is a place named Mazagran in the Ardennes. It serves as an important crossroads there.

As we stand here at Rond-point Mazagran, remember the soldiers in Algeria. Think of their resourcefulness. Imagine the strong, sweet coffee warming their spirits. Consider how a simple drink and a cup could become symbols of French military history.
