“Ever wondered where kingdoms leave their mark?” I ask. Today, we explore Dauh Puri Kelod in Denpasar. It is more than just a village. It is a place with a story.

Dauh Puri Kelod is a village in Denpasar Barat. It is part of the city of Denpasar in Bali. This Indonesian village has a tale to tell. Its area spans 1.88 square kilometers.

In 2023, Dauh Puri Kelod was home to 11983 people. There were 5919 men and 6064 women. The sex ratio stood at 97. Dauh Puri Kelod’s story goes back centuries.

Once, the Kingdom of Brangsinga ruled here. It watched over southern Bali. Later, the Kingdom of Badung won a war. They took over. Dauh Puri Kelod has seen kingdoms rise and fall.

Near Dauh Puri Kelod lies Pura Dalem Tegeh Gumi. This temple connects to Arya Kanuruhan. He was a secretary in Bali after Majapahit conquered it. Arya Kanuruhan had a son named Arya Brangsinga. Arya Brangsinga had kids named Ki Gusti Sebelanga and Ki Gusti Made Blang. Ki Gusti Sebelanga lived in what is now Banjar Sebelanga.

In old times, Denpasar was a scary forest. It was called Alas Badeng. Only Arya Brangsinga’s family dared to live in southern Bali. They made the land safe.

Pura Dalem Tegeh Gumi is very important. Temples come here to ask for blessings. They seek taksu for their sacred objects. These objects include barong and rangda. The taksu shrine is next to Ratu Gede’s storage. He is shown as a barong ket.

People from Canggu, Kuta, and Begawan visit. They want blessings from Ida Bhatara-Bhatari. These are gods at Pura Dalem Tegeh Gumi. The sacred objects have already completed rituals. They are not empty.

Some ask for taru here. One example is sasuhunan from Puri Jrokuta. After the rituals, they return for blessings. They pray to Ida Dalem in the main building.

Pura Dalem Tegeh Gumi is a key temple. Six banjar from Denpasar’s traditional villages use it. Their main temples are elsewhere. But they use Pura Dalem Tegeh Gumi for their Kahyangan Dalem.

Dauh Puri Kelod is more than numbers and borders. It is a place of history. Kingdoms fought here. Temples still seek blessings here today. The village connects to Bali’s past and present. It links gods, kings, and people.
