Built in the 1760s Lynetten is more than just a name. It’s a story etched in stone and seawater. Lynetten a half-moon shaped fortification was part of Copenhagen’s impressive defense system. It worked alongside Kastellet Christianshavns Vold and the Trekroner sea fort. Together they formed a formidable shield against seaborne attacks. Imagine the cannons roaring to life. Protecting the city from invaders.

Lynetten wasn’t initially armed. That changed during the 1848 war. The need for defense was clear. Canons were added transforming Lynetten into a powerful defensive position. In the late 19th century Lynetten underwent expansion. It was connected to Refshaleoen to support Burmeister & Wain’s shipyard. Think of the bustling activity. The shipyard’s growth intertwined with Lynetten’s history.

A residential building was constructed early on. This building served multiple purposes. It housed soldiers acted as a command post and even stored gunpowder. Quite a multi-functional building for its time. During World War II a degaussing station was built on Lynetten. This station removed magnetism from ships. This was crucial for navigating minefields. The station remained active until 2012 a surprisingly long time.

In 1962 Lynetten ceased to be a military fortification. It remained under the ownership of the Danish Defense for many years. Today some of Lynetten’s buildings are used by Teaterøen. The barracks from 1936 stands as a testament to the site’s long and varied history. A testament to adaptation and change.

Lynetten’s transformation continues. In 1973 construction began on a massive wastewater treatment plant. It’s now Denmark’s largest plant. This plant serves not only Copenhagen but also surrounding municipalities. It’s a symbol of modern infrastructure built upon a historic foundation. Lynetten’s past present and future are intricately linked. This little moon shaped island continues to evolve its story unfolds with every passing year. It’s a fascinating blend of defense innovation and urban development.
