Lost beneath layers of history, can you hear the echoes of Roman soldiers and the whispers of ancient Celtic tribes? This is Aquincum. It was once a vibrant city on the northeastern border of the Roman Empire. Today, its ruins lie within Budapest.

Aquincum started as a Celtic settlement. The Eravisci tribe called this place home long before the Romans arrived. Around 41 to 54 AD, the Romans established a military base here. A 500-strong cavalry unit marked the start. Later a legion of 6000 men was stationed here.

Around 106 AD, Aquincum became the capital of Pannonia Inferior. The city thrived. By the end of the 2nd century, Aquincum had about 30,000 residents.

Imagine bustling streets filled with merchants, soldiers, and citizens. Aquincum became a true Roman city. It featured central heating in homes. Public baths offered relaxation. Temples honored Roman gods, and palaces housed the elite.

Two impressive amphitheatres stood here. These venues hosted gladiatorial combats and beast fights. The Aquincum Museum displays artifacts from the city. Marvel at mosaics and restored Roman houses.

Emperors like Marcus Aurelius visited Aquincum. It is believed that Marcus Aurelius may have even written parts of his book Meditations here. Aquincum was a key strategic point. It was a center of operations against neighboring tribes.

Christianity began spreading here in the 3rd century. But the good times did not last. Constant attacks weakened Aquincum. By 350 AD, much of the city was destroyed. Germanic tribes and Huns invaded the area.
