“Silent march,” they say. The words encapsulate the story etched in this bronze figure before us the 廣田弘毅像 Stele.

Let me introduce you to the 廣田弘毅像 Stele. It is not just a sculpture, but a stark reminder of a complex past. This bronze statue stands solemnly near the entrance of the Fukuoka Art Museum. It portrays Hirota Koki a man of Fukuoka who rose to become Prime Minister.

Hirota Koki’s life took a dramatic turn during the Second World War. He faced accusations of being responsible for Japan’s aggression. The Tokyo Tribunal sentenced him to death.

During the trial Hirota Koki maintained silence. He did not defend himself. He believed he should take full responsibility for events that occurred during his time in high office. Hirota Koki also worried about the impact on the Emperor and those around him.

Many questioned the death sentence given to Hirota Koki. Even some Allied prosecutors thought it was too harsh. Joseph Keenan, a chief prosecutor, reportedly called it a preposterous verdict. He felt a life sentence would have been more appropriate.

The 廣田弘毅像 Stele stands as a gift. Former Fukuoka Mayor Shinoda Yuichi presented it. The statue’s pedestal bears Hirota Koki’s farewell poem. It reads in Japanese: “Hiroku kōkotsu danshin yorozu yo”. The English translation is not available.

Now, consider the statue’s location. It stands before the Fukuoka City Art Museum. The 廣田弘毅像 Stele prompts reflection on war, responsibility and peace.

What do you think about the 廣田弘毅像 Stele standing here? Take a moment. Perhaps we can all hope for a lasting peace.
