Rising majestically near the Boulevard des Dames and the Quai de la Joliette stands Lotissement le Castel a testament to Marseille’s architectural heritage. This isn’t just a housing development. It’s a captivating story woven into the fabric of the city.

Lotissement le Castel occupies the site of a former Art Deco building. This building was the original headquarters of the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique. Designed in 1929 by the renowned architect Gaston Castel it boasted a stunning facade and remarkable ironwork created by the Maison Subes. Gaston Castel a recipient of the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1913 was responsible for many of Marseille’s iconic landmarks. His style is evident in Lotissement le Castel’s preserved and restored facades and iconic Clock Tower.

The transformation of this historical landmark was a feat of engineering and architectural preservation. The project involved extensive rehabilitation reconstruction and the addition of new structures. The existing 9500 square meters were expanded to a total of 23400 square meters. This ambitious undertaking was guided by a desire to honor Castel’s original vision while meeting modern needs. The result is a harmonious blend of old and new a testament to architectural ingenuity.

Eiffage Construction led the remarkable renovation completed in 2018. It carefully preserved many original elements including the grand staircase Clock Tower and even the old telephone booth. The new Lotissement le Castel includes 115 residential units a four-star business tourism residence commercial spaces and office space. The project received several environmental certifications showcasing Eiffage’s commitment to sustainability.

Before its transformation the building served as the headquarters of the SNCM a maritime company tracing its origins back to the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique. The building’s prominent location at the corner of the Boulevard des Dames and the Quai de la Joliette provided excellent visibility a fitting location for a company connected to the sea.

Lotissement le Castel is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a living legacy a harmonious marriage of history and modernity. It stands as a proud symbol of Marseille’s enduring spirit a reminder of its rich past and its vibrant present. Its story continues today a vibrant community thriving in the shadow of this iconic structure. The legacy of Gaston Castel lives on.
