Could a street hold the echoes of a life lived on the vast ocean? Here, on Rue de l’Amiral Courbet, the spirit of a French admiral lingers. Rue de l’Amiral Courbet isn’t just a street; it’s a tribute to Amédée Courbet, a name synonymous with French naval power in the late 19th century. Born in Abbeville, France, in 1827, Courbet’s life was a tapestry woven with threads of ambition, duty, and ultimately, tragedy. He began his naval career in 1849, serving on ships like the Capricieuse, which took him on a journey around the world. This early exposure to the vastness of the seas ignited a passion within him, a passion that would shape his destiny. Rue de l’Amiral Courbet whispers of a man who rose through the ranks, from midshipman to admiral, earning recognition for his strategic brilliance and decisive action. He commanded the Tonkin Coasts Naval Division during a turbulent period in French colonial history. His victories at the Battle of Thuận An in 1883 solidified French control over Huế, Vietnam, forcing the Vietnamese court to acknowledge French authority. Later, commanding the Tonkin Expeditionary Corps, he led the French to victory in the brutal Sơn Tây Campaign, a campaign that pushed the Black Flag Army to its breaking point. The echoes of cannon fire and the whispers of strategic commands seem to reverberate along Rue de l’Amiral Courbet. In 1884, as the commander of the newly formed Far East Squadron, Courbet faced his most challenging test. The Sino-French War had begun. At the Battle of Fuzhou, his squadron devastated the Chinese Fujian fleet, a victory that etched his name in the annals of French naval history. Yet, victory came at a price. Rue de l’Amiral Courbet tells the story of a man burdened by the responsibility of command. He consistently sought to minimize French casualties, often canceling attacks if the risk was too high. While reserved and private, he earned the respect and love of his men, who recognized his deep concern for their lives. Ironically, it wasn’t enemy fire that felled the admiral. In the Pescadores Islands, while France occupied the archipelago, cholera claimed Courbet’s life in 1885. He died aboard his flagship, the Bayard, the same ship that carried his body back to France for a state funeral. Here, on Rue de l’Amiral Courbet, the city remembers the admiral. His name, etched on the street signs, serves as a constant reminder of his service, his victories, and the sacrifices made during a pivotal era of French history.
