“Ninety-nine years strong.” That is how long the União Espírita Suburbana has been serving Rio de Janeiro. Today we explore this beautiful building. It stands as a testament to faith and charity.

The União Espírita Suburbana’s story began in 1916. Manoel Fernandes Figueira led an effort to integrate Spiritism in the suburbs. The União Espírita Suburbana initially found its home on Rua Dias da Cruz. It was number 177 using the old numbering system. Charity was a core principle. They raised funds through various activities.

In 1922 the União Espírita Suburbana acquired a property. This property was on Rua Oldegard Sapucaia. Back then it was called Travessa Hermengarda. Before Carlos Lacerda’s government this street was different. Travessa Hermengarda offered access to the hillside’s high point. The street was only lowered in the 60s. Also Joaquim Méier gained its viaduct.

The União Espírita Suburbana secured resources for building renovations. The new Asylo Legiao do Bem opened in 1926. These improvements allowed them to help more elderly women. This was a pressing social issue then and now. The Méier neighborhood has a high concentration of elderly people outside the South Zone.

Besides social work the União Espírita Suburbana held conferences. Newspapers announced these events. They further emphasized the district’s religious centrality. It showed its growth as a subcenter within the city.

Today the União Espírita Suburbana continues its work. It maintains a piece of architectural history. Volunteer work remains the main support for its mission. It exemplifies enduring faith and community support. The União Espírita Suburbana continues to transform lives through its charitable work. It offers a haven for those in need. It preserves a legacy of compassion and spiritual guidance in Rio de Janeiro.
