Gazing upon Sucy – Bonneuil station, it’s hard to imagine this bustling transportation hub once served a quiet agricultural village. Sucy-en-Brie, nestled between the Marne River and the Forest of Notre-Dame, was largely shaped by its history under the canons of Notre Dame de Paris. From the 7th century until the French Revolution, they were the seigneurs of this land. Imagine Sucy-en-Brie in the 17th century, a tranquil escape for wealthy Parisians seeking respite from city life. Several grand châteaux, like the Château de Sucy designed by the renowned architect François Le Vau, sprang up across the landscape, marking the arrival of a new era. Even the esteemed Madame de Sévigné spent part of her childhood in the Château de Montaleau, now the Tribunal d’Instance. The arrival of the railway in 1872, at Sucy – Bonneuil station, irrevocably changed the town. The once sleepy village began to grow, transforming into the bustling suburb we see today. Yet, remnants of its rich past still remain. The 12th-century church of Saint-Martin, clustered around the old village center, stands as a testament to Sucy-en-Brie’s enduring history. Four of the original châteaux, including the Château de Sucy, still grace the landscape. The Château de Sucy, after a period of neglect, was meticulously restored and now houses the conservatory of music. Inside, you can find stunning ceiling paintings by Charles Le Brun, a major 17th-century artist. The old village, with its narrow streets and the restored Château de Haute-Maison, now the town’s wedding hall, evokes a sense of timelessness. The Fort de Sucy, built in the late 19th century, offers a fascinating glimpse into French military architecture. Though partially destroyed during World War II, it’s now being restored and hosts various associations. Sucy – Bonneuil station, the gateway to this charming commune, reminds us of the transformative power of time and progress, while the echoes of Sucy-en-Brie’s rich history linger in every corner.
