Can a church be born in a garage? Progressive Life-Giving Word Church can trace its roots back to a humble beginning in 1925. It started in Sister Frances Autrey’s garage in Maywood, Illinois. This was Maywood’s first Church of God in Christ. The Progressive Life-Giving Word Church, as we know it today, stands as a testament to its enduring spirit.
The church’s journey was marked by several moves within Maywood. One notable location was the rear building of a Jewish Synagogue. The church thrived under the leadership of its first pastor, Elder W. J. Greenlee, appointed in 1927. Several pastors followed, each contributing to the church’s growth.
A pivotal moment occurred in 1941 with the arrival of Elder James B. Alford, affectionately known as “Papa Alford.” Despite initial challenges, Papa Alford’s steadfast faith and the unwavering support of the church mothers propelled the ministry forward. The church officially incorporated in 1947. Under Papa Alford’s guidance, renovations included adding a basement and literally straightening the leaning church building. This inspired a new name: Progressive Church of God in Christ.
The congregation marched into a new era in 1962. They acquired the Jewish Synagogue at 431-33 South 13th Avenue. This marked a significant step in the Progressive Life-Giving Word Church’s evolution. Papa Alford’s legacy as a master Bible teacher resonated within the community. He was known for his simple explanations of scripture and deep commitment to prayer and fasting.
Papa Alford’s son, Donald, joined the ministry in 1975. He brought a wave of innovation. He introduced the 24-hour prayer line, structured Bible studies, and a ministry for those battling addiction. The church’s rich musical heritage also flourished. Their radio broadcasts, starting in 1948, brought their message to a wider audience. The radio choir’s recordings, many featuring songs written by Minister Donald Alford, became a source of inspiration.
After Papa Alford’s passing in 1983, Donald L. Alford took the helm. He led the church through a period of transformation. The church became Progressive Life-Giving Word Cathedral in 1990. This reflected its commitment to spreading the life-giving word. The church continued to expand its outreach, embracing television, community programs, and international missions.
Progressive Life-Giving Word Church purchased the Joyeaux Community Center in 1998. A devastating roof collapse in 1999, caused by record snowfall, tested their resolve. Undeterred, they emerged stronger. A financial windfall enabled them to continue their mission.
The year 2000 marked the church’s 75th anniversary. This year was characterized by an outpouring of generosity. The church gave away over $10,000 to families in need. This act of compassion led to unexpected donations and reinforced their motto as the “Love Capital of the World.” Finally, in 2002, Progressive Life-Giving Word Church found its current home. The former Lowes Theatre at 4500 Frontage Road in Hillside became the new sanctuary. This symbolized their journey of faith, resilience, and unwavering commitment to spreading God’s love.
