Standing in front of Saint John the Apostle, right in the heart of Waterloo, you can feel the history of the church pulsating beneath your feet. It’s hard to imagine that only a few centuries ago, this grand structure stood in the middle of a swampy marsh. It all started with a vision to provide a place for London’s growing population to gather for worship and find solace. Saint John the Apostle was one of four new churches built in the area during that time. It was designed by Francis Bedford, a well- respected Greek scholar, and had the ambition to reflect the glorious Greek Revival style. The church opened its doors in 1824, and over the years, it has stood as a beacon of faith and hope amidst the changing landscape of London. Despite facing a bomb attack during World War II, Saint John the Apostle stood strong and resilient. The church was lovingly restored, and in 1951, it was rededicated as the Festival of Britain Church. Today the church continues to serve as a vibrant spiritual home, offering a haven for the people of Waterloo. The Church even hosts the Waterloo Festival annually to connect with the community in a vibrant way. That is one thing that hasn’t changed throughout the years, the constant effort to connect with Londoners.
