The story of the Mouche begins far from Paris. It starts in Lyon, at the end of the 19th century. A shipyard was established in the La Mouche area. The boats built there were simply named La Mouche 1, La Mouche 2, and so on.
Initially, these “Mouches” transported goods and passengers around Lyon. They weren’t designed for tourism. Everything changed at the Universal Exhibition of 1867 in Paris. The shipyards of La Mouche sent about thirty passenger boats to Paris. They transported over 2.5 million passengers during the exhibition.
After the Second World War, river transport declined. Jean Bruel saw an opportunity. He acquired one of the last boats from the Universal Exhibition. Bruel started offering tourist cruises on the Seine. To promote his new company, Bruel invented a fictional character, Jean-Sébastien Mouche. He presented Mouche as the boat’s designer.
Bruel even held an inauguration ceremony with a bust of Jean-Sébastien Mouche. The Minister of Transport and other important figures attended. The press covered the event. This marked the beginning of a new tourist attraction on the Seine.
Today, the Bateaux Mouches offer various experiences. You can take a simple guided tour. Or you can enjoy a romantic dinner cruise. The boats pass by iconic landmarks. These include the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame. They also pass the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay.
The cruise usually starts near the Pont de l’Alma. The boats travel towards Notre Dame. They pass by the Louvre, City Hall, and the Conciergerie. The boat turns around near the Arab World Institute. You can admire Notre Dame closely. The cruise continues past the Musée d’Orsay and the National Assembly. Finally, you will see the Eiffel Tower.
