Catena del Baldo

Is it a mountain or is it a garden? The Catena del Baldo, stretching before you, has been called both. This majestic mountain range, adorning the landscapes of Trento and Verona, is more than just a pretty face. The Catena del Baldo boasts a rich history, dating back to the Roman era when it was known as “Mons Polninus”. The name “Baldo”, however, emerged later, derived from the German word “Wald”, meaning forest. This name, first appearing on a German map in 1163, speaks to the lush forests that blanket the slopes of the Catena del Baldo. The Catena del Baldo is also called the “Garden of Europe”, a testament to its incredible biodiversity. Wander through its varied landscapes and you’ll encounter everything from Mediterranean flora to alpine meadows. Look closely and you might spot the endemic anemone, the delicate orchid, or the rare slipper orchid. But the Catena del Baldo hides more than just botanical treasures. Legends whisper of ancient trade routes crossing these very mountains, connecting the plains to the heart of the Alps. Some even believe that Ötzi the Iceman, whose journey ended tragically in a distant glacier, may have walked the Catena del Baldo on his final journey.
