Amidst the urban tapestry of Singapore, a sanctuary of serenity awaits. The Sri Lankaramaya Buddhist Temple, nestled on St. Michael’s Road in Bendemeer, beckons you to step into its tranquil embrace. This isn’t just any temple. It’s the oldest Sri Lankan Theravada Buddhist Temple in Singapore, a testament to the enduring legacy of Buddhism. Sri Lankaramaya Buddhist Temple stands as a vibrant hub for the Sinhalese Buddhist community, a place where cultural traditions intertwine with spiritual practices. The story of Sri Lankaramaya Buddhist Temple begins in 1920. A group of Sinhalese Buddhist migrants, longing for a spiritual home, formed the Singapore Sinhala Buddhist Association. Their initial journey was nomadic, moving from Short Street to Race Course Road, Dhoby Ghaut, Niven Road, Wilkie Road, and finally Spottiswood Park. In 1938, they found a temporary haven on Outram Road. But the growing community soon outgrew this space. Then, in a twist of fate, members of the Ceylon Pioneer Corps arrived in Singapore with Lord Mountbatten’s forces after World War II. These Buddhist soldiers guided the association to a two-acre plot on St. Michael’s Road. With combined efforts and meager salaries, they secured the land. The foundation stone was laid in 1949 by Sir Franklin Gimson, the then British Governor of Singapore. The Sri Lankaramaya Buddhist Temple was officially born in 1952. A brass Buddha statue, gifted by India’s Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, was brought in a grand procession from Outram Road to its new home in the Bodhi Shrine. Today, Sri Lankaramaya Buddhist Temple is more than just a place of worship. It is a living embodiment of Theravada Buddhist traditions, as practiced in Sri Lanka. Resident monks, engaged on a yearly basis, lead regular Dhamma events. Sutta discussions, meditation practices, chanting, pujas, and blessings fill the temple’s calendar. Sri Lankaramaya is also a cultural center, hosting vibrant celebrations like the Sri Lankan New Year in April and Vesak Day. The temple grounds hold a unique treasure. A Bodhi tree, grown from a sapling of the sacred tree in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, stands tall. Four Buddha images grace its base, facing the cardinal directions. The temple’s architecture is a blend of traditional and modern. White buildings, housing a library, a main shrine, and a rooftop stupa, are interspersed with open spaces and lush greenery. A striking 45-foot reclining Buddha statue greets visitors. A life-like effigy of King Devanampiyatissa paying homage to Arhat Mahinda depicts the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. This tableau, complete with grazing deer and a miniature bridge, is a vibrant testament to the spread of the Dhamma. Sri Lankaramaya Buddhist Temple isn’t just a destination. It is an experience, a journey into the heart of Sri Lankan Buddhist tradition.
