Slipping through time, let’s journey to 1887 at Puerto Dock Sud. The air crackled with ambition. The clang of hammers echoed across the Riachuelo River as workers laid the foundations for the Mercado Central de Frutos. This massive warehouse, intended to house wool and leather, marked the beginning of Puerto Dock Sud’s transformation. This project was part of a larger vision. It included dredging the Riachuelo’s mouth, allowing deep-draft merchant ships to access the burgeoning port. The Sociedad Dock Sud de la Capital, under Paul Angulo y Cía, secured the rights to excavate and operate this new port in 1888. Engineer Luis Augusto Huergo, the mastermind behind numerous projects, designed the port and a nearby neighborhood for the workers. Construction began in 1889. However, the dream faltered when the company went bankrupt the following year. Many of the newly built homes stood abandoned. The Ferrocarril del Sud (Southern Railway) later revived the project. They completed the port in 1905. By then, the area was already known as “Dock Sud,” a testament to the original company’s enduring legacy. Puerto Dock Sud quickly became a hub of activity. Coal and grain unloaders lined the docks. In the 1920s, the Anglo refrigerator plant and fuel tank farms arrived, transforming the landscape. Power plants and other industrial facilities followed, solidifying Puerto Dock Sud’s industrial character. Puerto Dock Sud’s strategic location and deep-water access made it attractive to industries. The area became a vital link in Argentina’s growing economy. The port also shaped the surrounding communities, drawing immigrants and workers who sought opportunities in the bustling port. Puerto Dock Sud continued to evolve. In 1931, Shell CAPSA established its first refinery in the area, further shaping the area’s industrial identity. Puerto Dock Sud’s growth wasn’t without its challenges. The area developed organically, lacking a cohesive urban plan. This led to unique characteristics, some of which remain visible today. By 1993, Puerto Dock Sud transitioned from national to provincial jurisdiction, becoming part of Buenos Aires province’s port complex. It specialized in handling liquid fuels and chemical products. Today, Puerto Dock Sud stands as a testament to its industrious past. It continues to be a vital component of Argentina’s economy, handling a diverse range of cargo. The port’s story, from its humble beginnings as a wool and leather warehouse to a major industrial hub, is a reflection of Argentina’s own journey of growth and transformation.
