In 1883 a small group formed New Zion Missionary Baptist Church. They previously worshipped at Millstone Baptist Church. They purchased a half-acre plot. An old tobacco factory stood on the land. Services were held there for years. Reverend Reed Coleman led them. Later a new church building was constructed. Reverend Charles Coleman became the second pastor. Reverend W H Crawley was the third pastor. Then came Reverend Johnson. During his tenure tragedy struck. A fire destroyed the church. Undeterred the congregation rebuilt. In 1908 the walls went up again.
Reverend J C Banks was the fifth pastor. His success continued until Reverend Crawley’s return. He pastored New Zion for forty years. He died in 1932. Reverend Albert Younger followed. He served until his death in 1937. Reverend H C Barksdale became the eighth pastor. He served until his health failed. Reverend E G Williams became pastor number nine in 1942. Lightning struck the church in 1947. Again the congregation rallied. They rebuilt. The dedication was in 1953. The mortgage was burned in 1953. Reverend Williams resigned in 1959. New Zion was without a pastor for a time. Reverend Joseph B Simon became pastor number ten. He served from 1961-1971.
Reverend E G Williams returned in 1971 as pastor number eleven. He served until his death in 1987. Reverend Willie Nelson Yancey was elected pastor in 1989. Many deacons and trustees served New Zion. The church has faced challenges. It has persevered through fires and periods without a pastor. This enduring spirit reflects unwavering faith. New Zion Missionary Baptist Church stands as a testament to community resilience. God’s grace has sustained this church for over a century. It continues to serve its community. The church is a true beacon of faith.
