Gazing upon Oak Brook Community Church, a wave of warmth greets you. It’s more than just a building. It’s a testament to faith, resilience, and community. Oak Brook Community Church began its life in 1935 as a humble tent revival in the bustling streets of Chicago, led by the fervent J. Robert Ashcroft. This nascent congregation, initially known as Calvary Tabernacle, found its first home in a repurposed bank building. Eventually, they moved to a dedicated space on North Avenue, constructed in 1955. Outreach has always been a cornerstone of Oak Brook Community Church. The church’s dynamic bus ministry brought children and teenagers to Sunday school and Friday night programs, nurturing their faith and fostering a sense of belonging. Calvary Tabernacle, in collaboration with neighboring churches, established the Chicago Christian Academy, a Christian elementary school, right on the church grounds. In the early 1970s, Calvary Tabernacle faced a challenge familiar to growing communities – they needed more space. Their existing location couldn’t accommodate their expanding congregation. The search for a new home led them to a remarkable 18-acre plot in Oak Brook. The church, now known as Oak Brook Christian Center, held its inaugural service at Butler Elementary School in October 1974. Evening services were later added at St. Joseph Seminar. Finally, in 1978, Oak Brook Community Church opened the doors of its first permanent facility on Midwest Road. Continued growth led to the construction of the current auditorium in 1992. In 1999, the church adopted its present name: Oak Brook Community Church. The church’s dedication to outreach continued. It manifested in various forms. A counseling center, a thrift store, a bus ministry to the Brandywine subdivision, Oak Brook Christian School, Awana, and Sonlight programs all served the community. Today, Oak Brook Community Church extends its hand through programs like Bridges, International Student Ministries, and its Spanish congregation. Oak Brook Community Church embraces the Assemblies of God doctrines. These include a belief in the Trinity, salvation through Christ, baptism, communion, divine healing, and the second coming. The church’s beliefs are detailed on their website. They offer a rich tapestry of faith, hope, and love. Oak Brook Community Church isn’t just a building. It is a vibrant hub of faith, a place where lives are transformed, and a community that continues to grow and serve.
