After her mother’s death in 1881 the family moved to Mackay Queensland. There young Helen met and married Charles Armstrong. In 1884 they returned to Melbourne. Nellie determined to pursue her dream. She made her debut at the Melbourne Town Hall on May 17 1884. One critic proclaimed she sings like one out of ten thousand.
Success led her to London and Paris. In Paris she studied with Mathilde Marchesi. Marchesi gave her a new name Melba a shortened version of Melbourne. Melba debuted as an opera singer in Brussels in 1887. She then conquered the stages of Covent Garden and Paris. Melba became an international sensation. She toured extensively for decades performing for royalty and mingling with the rich and famous.
Her life wasn’t without scandal. She had an affair with Philippe Duke of Orleans. Her marriage ended in divorce in 1900. Melba returned to Australia in 1902 for a hugely successful tour. She made over 100 recordings of her singing. She continued touring even venturing into Australia’s outback in 1909.
She bought property in Coldstream near Lilydale building Coombe Cottage. Australia became a more significant part of her life. She established a singing school at the Melbourne Conservatorium. She helped raise 100 000 pounds for war charities. In her later years she gave farewell concerts around the world.
Melba died in Sydney in 1931. Her passing was mourned as if she were royalty. This small plaque is a tribute to a remarkable life.
