On a hot summer day in 1983, a brave firefighter named Sidney Brown rushed into a burning house here in Chicago. He was responding to reports of trapped children. Sadly, it turned out to be a false alarm. Sidney Brown, tragically, lost his life that day. Today, we stand at Sidney Brown Memorial Park. It’s a place dedicated to his memory and sacrifice. The Chicago Park District established this park in 1983. It spans nearly seven acres and serves the Chatham neighborhood. Originally, residents expected a larger park, even picketing during its development. However, the park district couldn’t acquire more land. Despite this, improvements continued. In 1990, they renamed the park in honor of Sidney Brown. He was the first African-American firefighter in Chicago to die in the line of duty. Brown, known as the “hydrant man”, was known for his bravery. He connected hoses to hydrants, often making him the last one into a burning building. Sidney Brown’s story reminds us of the courage and selflessness displayed by firefighters every single day.
