Stepping onto the grounds of Percy L. Julian High School, one can almost feel the weight of history and ambition. Percy L. Julian High School, a beacon of education on Chicago’s south side, opened its doors in September 1975. The school stands as a testament to the pursuit of knowledge and the power of community. Percy L. Julian High School is named after the renowned African-American research chemist, Percy Lavon Julian. His groundbreaking work and dedication to science serve as an inspiration to the students who walk these halls. The school’s establishment was a direct result of community activism. During the 1970-1971 school year, overcrowding at Harlan and Fenger High Schools prompted community members to petition the Chicago Board of Education for new schools. Their voices were heard, and Percy L. Julian High School, along with Corliss High School, became a reality. The building itself, designed by Chicago architect Myron Goldsmith, reflects a modern aesthetic. Interestingly, Goldsmith also designed Corliss High School, resulting in a shared architectural style between the two institutions. Originally referred to as the “103rd and Dan Ryan Site High School,” its final name honors Percy Lavon Julian. This decision by the school’s founding principal, Dr. Edward H. Oliver, cemented the school’s connection to a legacy of scientific excellence. Dr. Oliver, who served as principal from 1975 to 1991, holds the record for the longest principal tenure at Percy L. Julian High School. Today, Percy L. Julian High School offers a variety of programs. These programs include Career Technical Education in fields like Business, Gaming, Radio TV Broadcast, Medical Academy, and Digital Media, as well as a strong arts program and JROTC. The school is a vibrant hub of activity. It offers a wide range of extracurriculars, fostering student growth beyond the classroom. Even amid challenges, Percy L. Julian High School remains committed to its mission. An incident in 2013, where a fight led to the arrest of several students, underscored the complexities of urban education. However, the school continues to strive for a positive and productive learning environment. Percy L. Julian High School’s athletic teams, known as the Jaguars, compete in the Chicago Public League. The school boasts a history of athletic achievements, including championship titles in wrestling and basketball. Percy L. Julian High School stands not only as a place of learning but also as a symbol of community resilience and the pursuit of excellence. From its founding through community activism to its namesake’s scientific contributions, the school’s story is woven into the fabric of Chicago’s history.
