What if you could travel the world through Buddhist art and history without leaving Kandy? That’s precisely what the International Buddhist Museum offers. The International Buddhist Museum stands as the world’s first of its kind. Located next to the National Museum of Kandy and the Temple of the Tooth, it’s a place where cultures converge.

Originally this site housed the Palace of the Kandian King Wimaladharmasuriya. Later the British constructed a Victorian-era building here. This building then became the Kandy Kachcheri. In 2011 it was transformed into the International Buddhist Museum. This transformation marked the 2600th anniversary of Buddha’s enlightenment.

Inside the International Buddhist Museum you’ll discover contributions from 17 countries. These include Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, and Japan. Also China, Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Bhutan, and Afghanistan are represented. Each country showcases its unique Buddhist heritage.

The International Buddhist Museum demonstrates how Buddhism has adapted across cultures. Each room is dedicated to a different country. You will find unique items reflecting Buddhist practices and history. See meditation practices from Japan and historical relics from Thailand. Each exhibit displays its own style, symbols, and sacred objects.

Look for the Sarnath Buddha Statue. It greets visitors at the entrance. The statue reminds us of Buddhism’s origins in India.

Explore the Sri Lankan gallery. It delves into the early days of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Discover the arrival of the sacred Bodhi tree sapling. Trace the journey of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Note its significance to the island.

Don’t miss the Japanese Zen Gardens. The Japanese section reflects the importance of meditation, peace, and nature.

Notice the replica of Afghanistan’s Bamiyan Buddhas. These statues were carved into the cliffs of Afghanistan. Sadly destroyed in 2001, they symbolize the fragile history of Buddhist heritage.

The International Buddhist Museum is open daily from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Entrance fees support the museum’s maintenance and collection.

Its location within the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic complex is ideal. It allows easy exploration of Kandy’s spiritual heart.

Consider visiting the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, it houses a sacred relic of Buddha’s tooth.

Take a stroll around Kandy Lake. This man-made lake offers a peaceful retreat.

Explore the Royal Palace of Kandy. It provides a glimpse into Sri Lanka’s royal past.

For nature lovers Udawatta Kele Sanctuary is a nearby forest reserve perfect for spotting local wildlife.

The International Buddhist Museum offers a global view of Buddhism. It makes it a meaningful stop for anyone visiting Kandy. As you leave consider the stories and traditions you’ve encountered. They represent the enduring legacy of Buddhism worldwide.
