Imagine a lone boatshed clinging to the rugged coast. This is Sandy Bay on Enderby Island part of the Auckland Islands. It wasn’t always a scientific outpost. This humble structure holds a dramatic tale of survival.

In 1887 the Derry Castle wrecked nearby. Survivors faced a desperate journey. They had to reach Erebus Cove a main depot. The Stella Hut’s supplies were gone. They built a punt from the wreck’s timbers. Their only hope.

Captain Fairchild’s crew of the GSS Stella built Sandy Bay Boatshed in 1888. Inside they left a dinghy supplies and instructions for future castaways. A lifeline in the unforgiving Southern Ocean. The boatshed offered shelter from the harsh elements.

Years passed. The boatshed changed. Scientists used it as temporary housing. They studied the islands’ unique wildlife notably New Zealand sea lions. The dinghy disappeared taken by a fishing vessel to Stewart Island. Its current location is a mystery.

The Southern Margins Project further illuminated Sandy Bay’s history. Archaeologists uncovered evidence of Polynesian settlers. They lived on Enderby Island around 700 years ago. They hunted seals sea lions birds. They thrived in this seemingly inhospitable land. Their presence pushes the boundaries of known Polynesian voyages further south than ever before recorded. This remote outpost bears witness to incredible human resilience and exploration. Sandy Bay’s story continues to unfold blending survival ingenuity and a rich cultural heritage.
