East Barnet Baptist Church

In 1910, a humble “tin tabernacle” housed the fledgling East Barnet Baptist Church community. This simple structure on East Barnet Road marked the beginning of EBBC’s journey. East Barnet Baptist Church quickly outgrew its tin home. In 1930, a foundation stone was laid at the corner of East Barnet and Crescent Roads. A traditional Baptist church building was completed in 1931. Halls and additional rooms were added in 1938, expanding EBBC’s capacity to serve the community. Tragedy struck in 1980 when a fire ravaged the main church building. The hall survived, becoming a temporary sanctuary while the church redesigned and rebuilt. The new East Barnet Baptist Church emerged, blending with the old yet embracing modern flexibility. This design catered to the evolving needs of East Barnet Village. The church acquired a neighboring house in 1996, further expanding its reach. Inside East Barnet Baptist Church, light streams through clerestory windows. Pine laminated portal frames symbolize God’s love. Five collages by Margaret Bacon adorn the walls. They depict the church’s life and worship. A mosaic in the baptistry reminds the community of the Holy Spirit’s power. The flexible seating arrangement accommodates various worship styles. The Friend in Need Community Centre, established in 1982, extends EBBC’s service into the wider community. It offers support to vulnerable adults and promotes independent living for older adults. EBBC’s history is a testament to its resilience and commitment to serving its community. From a “tin tabernacle” to a modern, flexible space, East Barnet Baptist Church has consistently adapted to meet the needs of its congregation and the village it calls home.
