At-Taqwa Raya

“A symphony of whispers,” murmured an elderly man, adjusting his peci, “that’s what At-Taqwa Raya is to me.” At-Taqwa Raya isn’t just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to the devotion of Jakarta’s Muslim community. Situated in the heart of the Kemanggisan tax complex in Palmerah, Jakarta Barat, this grand mosque, with its large dome and towering minaret, has become a beacon of faith. The story of At-Taqwa Raya began humbly in 1976 as a small musalla, accommodating only 300 people. The mosque was officially inaugurated for Friday prayers on May 20, 1977. As the community grew, so did their need for a larger space. The tax employees of Kemanggisan, recognizing this need, generously contributed to the mosque’s rehabilitation. In 1985, At-Taqwa Raya underwent a complete transformation. The once small prayer space expanded into the magnificent structure we see today, capable of holding 2,000 worshippers. The expansion was driven by the difficulties faced by residents in finding adequate prayer spaces, especially during Tarawih and other large gatherings. They often had to borrow the hall of a local kindergarten, which eventually interfered with the children’s learning and practice of prayer. This led to the establishment of an Islamic school in the complex around 1972 or 1973, with teachers from Al-Azhar Kebayoran Baru. The community then decided to expand the musalla into a mosque to serve as a practical space for the children’s religious education. Today, At-Taqwa Raya stands as a symbol of community spirit and generosity, managed by the Taqwa Bhakti foundation. Its elegant white walls and vibrant blue-green mosaic dome welcome people from all walks of life. The surrounding lush trees and colorful flower gardens create a tranquil oasis for prayer and reflection. At-Taqwa Raya has even hosted prominent figures, from tax officials to the Minister of Religious Affairs and the Minister of Finance. It’s a place where whispers of faith echo through time, connecting the past with the present, and reminding us of the power of community.
