Stadtgarten Alaunpark

Established in 2016, Stadtgarten Alaunpark is more than just a green space. It’s a community garden with a heart. Stadtgarten Alaunpark thrives within the larger Alaunplatz, a historic area with a fascinating past. Alaunplatz wasn’t always a park. In the 18th century, it began as a cleared piece of forest. It later served as a military parade ground in the 19th and early 20th centuries. This use is reflected in its proximity to the Albertstadt military complex. After 1950, it transitioned to its current form, the vibrant Stadtgarten Alaunpark we enjoy today. Imagine the echoes of soldiers marching across the very ground where community members now gather. Erich Kästner, a German writer, once remarked that during its military days, the Platz resembled “the most magnificent and expensive operettas and revues.” This historical richness adds a unique layer to the modern community garden. Stadtgarten Alaunpark aims to connect people. It fosters interaction between local residents and institutions like kindergartens, schools, and senior centers. The garden is a hub for various themes. These include permaculture, ecological gardening, and environmental education. It also explores topics such as local history, grassroots democracy, socioculture, accessibility, and migrant participation. The garden covers approximately 320 square meters. It operates under a long-term lease agreement with the Office for Urban Green Spaces and Waste Management. This ensures its continued presence in the community. Stadtgarten Alaunpark isn’t just about gardening. It’s about bringing people together, fostering learning, and enriching the lives of those who visit.
