Originally built in 1663, the gardens served as one of Intramuros’ gates. Only the Governor-General could pass through for state occasions. During the British invasion of Manila in 1762, the gate was destroyed. By 1780, Puerta Real was reconstructed at its present location. It was part of a new defense plan for Intramuros. Despite this, the gate was damaged during the Battle of Manila in 1945. It was eventually restored in 1969. Further renovations occurred in 1989.
The original Real Gate was also known as the Royal Gate. It was erected at the terminus of Calle Real de Palacio. This is now General Luna Street. This gate was exclusively for the governor-general’s grand state occasions. It stood west of the Baluarte de San Andrés. It faced the ancient village of Bagumbayan.
These small but captivating gardens occupy the space of the old defensive moat. As you wander, gaze upon the Puerta Real. Admire sections of Intramuros’ walls adorned with moss.
Puerta Real Gardens is a fitting setting for Intramuros Evenings. This annual celebration of culture and heritage is curated by the Intramuros Administration. The rich history and beauty remind us to preserve our architectural treasures.
