Twenty domes. That’s what first strikes you about the Yeşilbağ Ulu Camii. Twenty domes rising majestically into the Istanbul sky. Each one a silent testament to the ambition of Sultan Bayezid I.

Imagine Sultan Bayezid I. Victorious at Nicopolis in 1396 he vowed to build twenty mosques in Bursa. His wise son-in-law Emir Sultan however proposed a single grand mosque. One that would surpass all others in size and splendor. The result is this magnificent structure before us. The Yeşilbağ Ulu Camii.
Look closer. Notice the rectangular plan. Three grand entrances beckon you in. The northern entrance is particularly impressive crafted from gleaming marble. Inside you will find twelve massive pillars. They support the weight of those twenty impressive domes. Each dome has an eleven-meter diameter.
The central dome is unique. It is topped by a skylight. This creates a stunning shaft of light illuminating the ablution fountain below. This sixteen-sided fountain is a central feature of the mosque. It is where worshippers purify themselves before prayer.
The interior is a feast for the eyes. One hundred and twenty-nine calligraphic inscriptions adorn the pillars and walls. Masters like Abdulfettah Efendi and Mustafa Izzet Efendi lent their skill. They created breathtaking examples of the ‘celi sulus’ and ‘kufi’ scripts. Even Sultan Mahmud II contributed his own calligraphy.
Examine the pulpit. It’s a masterpiece of ‘kundekari’ craftsmanship. Built without a single nail it is truly a work of art. The east side depicts the solar system. The west side illustrates the Milky Way. The inscription over the pulpit’s door confirms its completion in 1399 by order of Sultan Bayezid I.
