Sacred Heart Oakleigh Catholic’s story began in the early 1920s. The growing Catholic community needed a larger, more permanent place to worship. So, in 1923, the foundation stone was blessed and laid by The Most Revd Daniel Mannix. He was a prominent figure in the Catholic Church. R. Harper was the architect who designed the church. Revd Thomas Quinn PP also played a vital role in its early development.
Construction continued for three years. Finally, in 1926, Sacred Heart Oakleigh Catholic opened its doors. It became a spiritual home for generations of Catholics.
A notable inscription marks the foundation stone. It reads: “Memorial stone of this Church erected in honour of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was blessed and laid by The Most Revd Daniel Mannix DD LDD on 27th May 1923 R Harper Architect Revd Thomas Quinn PP”. This inscription serves as a lasting tribute to the church’s origins and its dedication to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Over the years, dedicated clergy members have served at Sacred Heart Oakleigh Catholic. Father Niall served in 1873. Father John O’Dowd followed. Father Quinn served from 1923 to 1926. Father Vincent Willis served from 1926. Father A. Fox was an assistant in 1957. Father John Morely Coyne served in 1966. Father Joe Hynan served. Since 2006, Father John Magri has been the Parish Priest.
Sacred Heart Parish School also shares a close history with the church. Established in 1934 by six Sisters from the Institute of Our Lady of the Missions. The school initially opened in the parish hall with 59 students. The school has grown significantly over the years. It has expanded its facilities to accommodate a growing student population.
