Once named St Marylebone Union Infirmary, St Charles’ Hospital has a rich history. Its story began in 1879. The foundation stone marked the start of something significant.

The Prince and Princess of Wales officially opened St Charles’ Hospital in 1881. It was then known as the St Marylebone Union Infirmary. Imagine the excitement of that day. Dignitaries and locals gathered to witness the opening of this vital institution.

In 1884, Princess Christian opened a nurses’ home at St Charles’ Hospital. This addition was crucial for training nurses. The Nightingale Fund supported the home. It became the oldest surviving nurses’ home established by the fund for Poor Law hospitals.

The facility underwent a name change in 1923. It became the St Marylebone Hospital. Then in 1930, the London County Council took over. It was renamed St Charles’ Hospital.

Joining the National Health Service in 1948 marked another milestone. St Charles’ Hospital continued to serve the community. It now operates as the St Charles Centre for Health and Wellbeing.

The architecture of St Charles’ Hospital is notable. Henry Saxon Snell designed the original building. He used a pavilion plan with three-storey blocks. Yellow stock brick and ‘Guardian’s Gothic’ style defined its look. Florence Nightingale even sent Snell a letter after the opening.

A central corridor connected the pavilion blocks. The design included an administrative block, kitchen, and services. A detached entrance block featured an archway and a chapel. A tall water tower dominated the complex. It stood 182 feet high. An artesian well 500 feet deep fed the tower.

The nurses’ home mirrored the infirmary’s style. It featured a two-storey entrance bay and four-storey towers. Dormers echoed the ventilating louvres of the main building.

St Charles’ Hospital has provided care for many years. It accommodated 744 patients when it first opened. Today, it continues to offer important healthcare services.

The main building of St Charles’ Hospital is Grade II listed. This designation recognizes its historical and architectural significance. The hospital stands as a testament to its long-standing commitment to healthcare.

Around 2012, St Charles’ Hospital was renamed St Charles Centre for Health and Wellbeing. It also started offering palliative care services. This change reflects the hospital’s evolving role in meeting the community’s needs.

Caroline Nompozola served as a house surgeon at St Charles’ Hospital. Her contributions highlight the dedication of the hospital’s staff. Many others have worked to provide care and support.

The records of St Charles’ Hospital offer a glimpse into its past. These include administrative records, patient records, and staff records. They tell the story of a hospital that has served London for over a century.

So as we stand here, remember the many lives touched by St Charles’ Hospital. From its beginnings as an infirmary to its current role, it remains a vital part of the community.
