Betrayal. That single word encapsulates a moment in history forever linked to the Rue Jean-Marie Poulmarch. This Parisian street stands as a memorial to a man who sacrificed everything for his beliefs.

The Rue Jean-Marie Poulmarch is more than just a street. It’s a reminder of a life cut short. It’s a symbol of resistance against oppression.

Jean-Marie Poulmarch was born in Paris in 1910. He became a dedicated unionist and communist activist. He was the son of a railway worker. Early on, he joined the General Confederation of United Labour. He also joined the Communist Youth. In 1933, Poulmarch spent thirteen months in the Soviet Union. By 1936, he had risen to the Central Committee of the Communist Youth. Two years later, he became the general secretary of the CGT union for chemical products in the Paris region.

In 1939, Poulmarch was mobilized in Constantine, Algeria. After being demobilized in 1940, he returned to Paris. He secretly continued his activism for the Communist Party.

Tragedy struck when a French police inspector arrested him. This occurred on October 5, 1940, at his home in Ivry-sur-Seine. Poulmarch was then imprisoned in several locations. These included Aincourt and Fontevrault-l’Abbaye. He was also held in Clairvaux and Châteaubriant.

On October 22, 1941, Jean-Marie Poulmarch was executed as a hostage. This took place at La Sablière with 26 other hostages. This execution was a reprisal by the Nazis. It was in response to the death of Lieutenant-Colonel Karl Hotz.

In his last letter to his wife, Laurence, Poulmarch expressed courage. He urged her to raise their son to be a free man. He wanted his son to fight for justice and defend the weak. His final words conveyed unwavering faith in a future of freedom.

The street was named Rue Jean-Poulmarch in 1946. It honors his memory and sacrifice. It serves as a poignant reminder of his life and ideals. His name is also inscribed on several monuments. These memorials stand in Dreux, Châteaubriant, and Nantes. They also stand in Les Lilas, Bagneux, and Montreuil.

The Rue Jean-Marie Poulmarch intersects with the Rue de Lancry. It also meets the Quai de Valmy. This area once formed part of the Rue des Vinaigriers.

Standing here on Rue Jean-Marie Poulmarch, remember the courage of a man. Remember his dedication to justice. Remember his love for his family. Let his story inspire us to stand against injustice. Let it inspire us to fight for a better world.
