Gaze upon the Circumsphere. This isn’t just any sculpture. It’s a celebration of Deptford’s rich maritime history. A testament to its role as a launching point for ships of discovery.

The Circumsphere stands proudly in the River Thames at Deptford Strand. Commissioned by Sustrans in 1998 it’s a site-specific artwork. It’s made of mild steel rod forming a 4500mm diameter sphere. But there’s more than meets the eye.

The design was a collaborative effort. Artists worked closely with the local environment. They considered geographical historical and visual aspects. The goal was a sculpture that felt as though it had always been there.

Its size and form are carefully linked to its surroundings. The Circumsphere is designed to interact with changing weather light and seasons. It reflects the river’s dynamism and changing moods.

Notice the inscription on a nearby metal plaque. It tells of Sir Francis Drake’s circumnavigation. His voyage ended at this very waterfront in 1581. The discs on the sculpture itself mark the route of his epic journey.

The plaque also reveals a fascinating detail. The Circumsphere is mounted on a dolphin. This refers to small mooring structures in the Thames. These provided low-tide moorings for ships barges tugs and lighters.

The Circumsphere isn’t merely a beautiful object. It’s a powerful symbol of Deptford’s past. It blends seamlessly into its surroundings yet powerfully commands attention. It stands as a reminder of exploration discovery and the enduring spirit of this historic place. It’s a conversation starter a point of contemplation and a magnificent sculpture that truly belongs here in London.
