Why does this street bear the name Rue Henri Jahier? It’s a question worth asking as we stand here. The Rue Henri Jahier in Drancy, France is more than just an address. It is a tribute to a man who stood against injustice.

Henri Jahier was born in Paris on January 28 1895. He lived a life of quiet dignity. He married Georgette Ismaël on November 9 1922. The couple made their home in Drancy at 16 rue Danton.

During the war Henri worked as an electrician. He was employed by the Compagnie de Transport en commun de la region parisienne. This company later became the RATP. He worked at the Flandre depot in Pantin.

The year 1941 marked a turning point. Henri Jahier was arrested on November 10 by the Germans. His home was searched. Authorities found an old revolver a box of bullets a book on communism and communist leaflets.

Henri explained the revolver belonged to his father. He claimed the leaflets were thrown into his garden by an unknown person. Despite his explanations Henri was imprisoned at La Santé prison in Paris.

On December 12 1941 Henri faced the tribunal of Gross Paris. The court was located on rue Boissy d’Anglas. He was condemned to death for possessing weapons. On December 19 1941 Henri Jahier was executed at Mont Valérien.

Initially Henri was buried at the Parisian cemetery of Ivry sur Seine. Later on April 18 1945 his remains were moved. They were reinterred in the military square of the communal cemetery of Drancy.

The city of Drancy honored Henri Jahier. The city council renamed rue Massenet in his memory. It became the Rue Henri Jahier. His name is also inscribed on the Memorial of Fighting France at Mont Valérien. It appears on a commemorative plaque at the Flandre depot and on a plaque at Drancy’s town hall.
