Did freedom have a price? On Rue Sanité Belair in Saint-Denis, the echoes of a Haitian heroine’s sacrifice whisper through the air. This street, named after Sanité Bélair, commemorates a life intertwined with the Haitian Revolution. Sanité Bélair, a lieutenant in Toussaint Louverture’s army, fought fiercely for Haiti’s liberation from French rule. Born in Verrettes, Haiti around 1781, she married Charles Bélair, a fellow soldier, in 1796. Together, they became symbols of resistance. Sanité Bélair wasn’t just a soldier’s wife. She was a soldier herself, rising through the ranks to become a lieutenant. She fought alongside her husband, sharing the dangers and the dream of a free Haiti. But their fight for freedom came at a steep cost. In 1802, they were captured by French forces. Charles was sentenced to death by firing squad. Sanité, as a woman, was condemned to beheading. Witnessing her husband’s execution, she urged him to die bravely. Then, she faced her own fate with extraordinary composure, refusing a blindfold. Accounts from La Fraternité, a Haitian weekly journal, describe her unwavering courage in those final moments. She challenged her executioners, demanding to die as a soldier, not a criminal. Her final cry, “Viv Libète anba esklavaj!” – “Liberty, no to slavery!” – resonated through the crowd of enslaved Haitians gathered to witness her execution. Though her life was cut short at 21, Sanité Bélair’s defiance became a beacon of hope. Rue Sanité Belair stands as a testament to her bravery, a reminder of the sacrifices made in the fight for liberty. Here in Saint-Denis, her name echoes across the ocean, carrying the spirit of the Haitian Revolution.
