“Wine.” What comes to mind when you hear that word? Perhaps you think of a relaxing evening. Maybe a celebratory toast. But have you ever considered the legacy behind each bottle? Right here, before the Viewpoint Christian Henschke, we’re not just observing a location. We are about to uncork a story that spans over 150 years, a tale of family, resilience, and the art of winemaking.

This story begins far from Argentina in the mid-1800s. Johann Christian Henschke, a man from Silesia, sought refuge in Australia. He wasn’t just running from his homeland. He was planting the seeds for a dynasty.

In 1862, Johann Christian purchased land in Keyneton. By 1868, he was producing his first vintage. It was a humble beginning of just 300 gallons. Johann Christian Henschke was a stonemason and wheelwright by trade. But he quickly adapted to the land. He made wines for family and friends. Demand grew. Wines were made for sale.

In 1873, his son Paul Gotthard Henschke took over. He expanded the vineyards. Wine production increased. Paul Gotthard purchased land near the Gnadenberg Church in 1891. This would become the renowned Hill of Grace Vineyard. He also directed the Henschke Family Brass Band.

Alf Henschke, Paul’s son, became the family’s custodian in 1914. Alf extended the original stone cellar. He focused on increasing production. The demand for fortified wine increased. Dry red and white wines were sold locally. These were known as ‘krugs’ in the Barossa.

Then came Cyril Henschke in 1950. He shifted focus to fine dry table wines. Cyril added fermentation cellars and underground tunnels. By the mid-1950s, he was a pioneer of single-varietal wines. His greatest legacy was the creation of Mount Edelstone and Hill of Grace. These became integral to Australia’s wine history.

Hill of Grace is Henschke’s best-known wine. The vines were planted in the 1860s. It is made with 155-year-old Shiraz vines on their own rootstock. They use biodynamic treatment and no irrigation. This makes the wine special. It is concentrated in flavors and aromas.

Today, Henschke is still family-owned. It remains in Keyneton, South Australia. They produce around 40,000 cases each year. The winery is known for its commitment to quality. They respect tradition.

As you stand at Viewpoint Christian Henschke, remember Johann Christian’s vision. Remember the generations who poured their hearts into every bottle. The Henschke family’s dedication is more than just a business. It’s a story etched in every vine. It is a legacy to be savored with every sip.
