“A dock with an 80-foot lock? What were they thinking?” you might ask. We’re standing before the remnants of Millwall Dock, once a bustling heart of London’s shipping industry. You see, Millwall Dock, despite its grand ambitions, opened in 1868 with a fatal flaw: its entrance lock was unusually narrow. This restricted the size of ships that could enter, a limitation that would eventually contribute to its decline. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. In its heyday, Millwall Dock buzzed with the activity of ships laden with timber and grain, the lifeblood of a growing city. This was a time before containerisation, when every sack and plank was handled individually, a testament to human toil and ingenuity. The air would have been thick with the scent of sawdust and the cries of stevedores unloading cargo. The dock even boasted its own flour mill, the Wheatsheaf Mill, its imposing structure a testament to the scale of the grain trade that flowed through these waters. Sadly, progress, as it often does, brought about change. The advent of containerisation shifted shipping traffic downstream, and Millwall Dock, like many of its counterparts, fell victim to the changing tides of the industry. It finally closed to commercial traffic in 1981. Today, you see a different landscape. Modern apartments and office blocks have sprouted where warehouses and cranes once stood. Yet, echoes of the past linger. The outline of the old dry dock, the name “Clippers Quay” whispering of a bygone era, remind us that beneath the modern façade lies a story waiting to be told, the story of Millwall Dock.
