His unique style blossomed. He wasn’t content with simply painting. He arranged paintings and watercolors in medallions of velvet or textured paper. Some critics labeled him a decorator. Carzou disagreed. He insisted his work was not just painting but also theatre.
His talent extended beyond canvases. He designed sets and costumes for prestigious productions. His work for Rameau’s Indes Galantes at the Opéra National de Paris launched him into the public eye. His contributions to the Ballets de Roland Petit and the Comédie-Française further cemented his reputation.
Carzou’s creativity knew no bounds. He also created lithographs illustrations tapestries. He even decorated the Church of the Presentation in Manosque creating a monumental Apocalypse. This wasn’t a traditional depiction of the biblical event. Instead it reflected his anxieties about war and the Holocaust. Later the Manosque church became the Fondation Carzou. A museum in Vence once showcased his work though it’s now closed. His influence remains. His works are held in prestigious collections worldwide. The Hermitage Museum the University of Michigan Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago all proudly display his art.
