Established in 1579, the Archdiocese of Manila has witnessed centuries of history unfold. The Archdiocese of Manila initially held jurisdiction over all the Philippine Islands. The first bishop, Domingo de Salazar, arrived in 1581 and immediately set about organizing the cathedral chapter.
