His photos weren’t posed or staged. They were glimpses of real life. He captured quiet moments. He highlighted incongruous scenes. Doisneau’s work celebrated human frailty.
Doisneau’s early life was marked by loss. His father died in World War I. His mother passed away when he was seven. He was raised by his aunt. At thirteen, he studied engraving and lithography. He later found photography. Initially, Doisneau was shy. He photographed cobblestones before people.
In the 1930s, Doisneau worked in advertising. He then became an assistant to photographer Andr\u00e9 Vigneau. In 1934, he joined the Renault car factory. He was a photographer for their advertising. In 1939, he was dismissed for being late. He then became a freelance photographer.
During World War II, Doisneau served in the French army. Later, he forged passports for the French Resistance. After the war, he returned to photography. He worked for Life magazine and others.
