Hidden amidst the tranquil northeastern expanse of Dazaifu, at the foot of the revered Mount Homan, lies the enchanting Kamado Jinja. Mount Homan, towering at 829 meters, has long been a sacred site, worshipped as the dwelling place of Shinto deities. Kamado Jinja itself offers breathtaking views, particularly during the cherry blossom season in spring and the vibrant foliage of autumn. This shrine isn’t just one entity but comprises two distinct sanctuaries. The Gegu sanctuary rests at the mountain’s base, while the Jogu sanctuary sits majestically at its peak. Both sanctuaries are dedicated to a trio of important figures: Tamayori-hime, the mother of Japan’s first emperor, Jimmu; Empress Jingu; and her son, Emperor Ojin, the 15th emperor of Japan. The history of Kamado Jinja is deeply intertwined with Dazaifu’s rise as Japan’s western capital in the 7th century. Legend whispers of Tamayori-hime’s divine power to unite people, making Kamado Jinja a cherished destination for couples and those seeking love. For the adventurous, a well-maintained trail winds its way from the lower to the upper sanctuary, a six-kilometer round trip offering a rewarding vista from Mount Homan’s summit. The lower sanctuary boasts a strikingly modern wooden structure. This architectural gem, designed by the renowned Masamichi Katayama, is a frequent feature in design publications. Here, you can find an array of votive plaques. Write down your wish and hang it within the shrine’s sacred grounds. The shrine also offers a collection of colorful amulets, each imbued with a unique power and purpose. Behind the building, an observation deck furnished with stylish benches designed by Jasper Morrison awaits. It’s the perfect spot to pause and soak in the tranquil beauty of the surrounding grounds and the panoramic views of the Dazaifu area. Kamado Jinja, with its rich history, stunning natural surroundings, and modern design elements, truly offers a unique and unforgettable experience.
